The other semifinal match will be an all-Argentina duel, meaning the host nation will be for sure playing for an unprecedented gold medal. The first team to advance was Argentina 2, formed by Estefania Milesi, Laura Moreno, Brenda Churin and Victoria Pozzo Galdon, after a Round 1 win over Nigeria followed by the 2-1 (8-15, 15-8, 15-10) upset of Czech Republic's Anna Dostalova, Magdalena Dostalova and Sarlota Svobodova.
A few minutes later, back-to-back bronze medalists Virginia Zonta, Julieta Puntin, Eugenia Tuliz and Cecilia Peralta managed to stay on track for another medal as they nailed the last semifinal berth. Early in the morning they subdued Japan in two sets, followed by a sensational 2-1 (15-9, 8-15, 15-13) over the USA's Alexandra Wheeler, Katherine Spieler, Karissa Cook and Emily Hartong, denying them the chance to repeat the two silver medals gathered in the European stages.
